Serving the local: From transactions to connections

Torino-Lingotto Fiere

For biologists, the health of an ecosystem lies in the vitality of interactions between its component species.

This lesson applies equally to bioregional food systems. New connections are needed to enhance regional food hubs, fibershed and grainsheds, forest and watershed recovery, soil repair, and land-based learning. A key role in fostering these new connections can be played by so-called ‘anchor institutions’ – from learning farms and local shops, to community colleges and libraries. John Thackara will describe the ways design is helping local organizations become multi-functional service hubs.
