Wiping Out “Caporalato”: Modern Slavery

Torino-Lingotto Fiere

“Caporalato” is the Italian term for the illegal hiring of farm laborers for very low wages, often involving violence, threats and intimidation: in effect a form of modern-day slavery.

This organized and widespread practice affects many different ethnic groups of migrants employed in Italy’s fields and farms. This exploitation of Sikh workers in the Agro Pontino shows how the recent law against the crime of illicit brokering is just a first step towards resolving the problem, but does not tackle the deeper causes that generate it.

The Terra Madre Thematic Forums are presented by delegates of the network and are open to the public as long as seats are available.
